Introduction:

I believe that our breath can be a constant source of empowerment to create our highest well-being- physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Cultivating 'Breath Literacy' (the wisdom and knowledge of how to breathe optimally moment by moment, breath by breath and in various circumstances throughout life) leads to our greatest well-being and peace as individuals and a planet.

The quality of our breath directly impacts the quality of our lives. Our respiratory system is the only system in the body that is involuntary and voluntary. The survival mechanisms in our brains, sensing any stress, catapult us into fight or flight mode, shallow breathing and breath holding. Many people exist in this state of mild to high anxiety, which compromises the immune system and healthy functioning of organs, glands and other systems. With 'Breath Literacy' we utilize the extraordinary power in our ordinary breath to direct our brains to strengthen the body's ability to regenerate, rejuvenate and thrive.

Based on the book "Breath Is Life. Taking In and Letting Go: How to Live Well, Love Well, BE Well, this series will be a master course on "Breath Literacy"which includes ancient and contemporary wisdom, knowledge and practices that come from Pranayama (the yogic science of breath), MBSR (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction), Qiqong and other disciplines. These practices are called BLIPPs (Breath Literacy's Instant Power Practices). They can be done in a blip of time to immediately change our brains, moving from SNS dominance to PNS dominance. Each session will be experiential, building on the previous session but also can stand alone for those unable to attend each one.

Session 1
What is Breath Literacy and Why Is It Important
Breath Literacy sets the foundation for understanding how our breathing is both an art and a science, and how to personally utilize this knowledge.

Session 2
The ABC’s of Breath Literacy
We will explore the ABC's of "Breath Literacy"- Awareness, Balance, Connection. How can we embody simple techniques- (BLIPPs: Breath Literacy's Instant Power Practices) all throughout our day that will enhance and maintain optimal well-being?

Session 3
Managing Stress with Breath
We will examine the implications of stress and engage BLIPPs (Breath Literacy's Instant Power Practices) to help manage stress and regulate emotions. How do executive functions and gifts of presence relate to our breath?

Session 4
Celebrating our Hara
We will celebrate our "Hara'" as our seat of life force. Learn how to we engage Belly/diaphragmatic breathing as foundational empowerment.

Session 5
How to Raise Your HQ (Happiness Quotient)
We will raise our "HQ" (Happiness Quotient) by lowering our "IQ" (Irritation Quotient). Learn how to utilize "breathing mojo" to enliven various areas in our lives?

Session 6
The Nose Knows
We will understand "How the nose knows" and the "nostrils really really know." Learn how to engage Alternate Nostril Breathing to calm, focus, aid memory, strengthen our immune system and enhance overall well-being.

Session 7
The BIP/BOP Breath
We will engage the Bip/Bop Breath (Breathe In Peace / Breathe Out Pain) in many nuances. How can knowledge of the map of consciousness from "Power Vs Force" by David R. Hawkins aid and increase Bip/Bop Breath benefits?

Session 8
Pranayama
We will investigate aspects of Pranayama (the yogic science of breath) and breath geometry. How can delving deeper into the art and science of breath increase our understanding and "artistry" of life?

Session 9
Breathing Peace and Calm
We will experience how our breath can create a sense of safety, calm and peace. How do we implement our breath to sleep better, feel more rested, relaxed and revitalized?

Session 10
Breath for Peak Performance
We will explore breathing for courage, empowerment and intuition. How can our breathing aid peak performance, personally and professionally?

Session 11
Breath as a Close Friend
We will look at our breath as being a closest friend throughout life. How can our breath nurture and nourish us on deeper levels?

Session 12
Breath Affects the Quality of Life
We will recap how the quality of our breath directly affects the quality of our lives, become proactive to creating the most fulfilling life possible. How can we simplify down to the breath?

About Your NWW Luminary Teacher

As founding director of Breathe The Change LLC, cofounder of nonprofit BreathLogic, and author of “Breath Is Life” Laurie Ellis-Young MTC, SYT, has a mission of sharing ‘Optimal Breathing’ with the world. A passionate yearning to experience the power of breath for navigating the “highs and lows” of life, led her to the heights of the Himalayas, and the depths of the Red Sea.

First adventuring alone and then guiding groups many times to Nepal, Peru, India, Tibet, Cambodia, Guatemala and twenty other countries, she experienced how conscious utilization of breath empowered her and others to find calm, overcome fears, and achieve “peak performances” in unimagined ways.

Laurie has practiced and studied breathwork, mind/body therapies, yoga, and well-being techniques from both ancient and contemporary traditions for over 40 years. A certified (SHIFT) peace ambassador, Laurie has presented for several peace-building organizations including the United Nations in Kosovo, the Alliance for Conflict Transformation in Bolivia, and OSCE (Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe) in Ukraine.

Decades of experiences sharing knowledge of “Breath Literacy” with diverse populations on six continents convince her that this vital knowledge can transform and empower individuals, groups organizations and systems.
