Connection Circles - For NWW Members
NWW Connection Circles are a great way to connect with like-hearted women
who want to explore a particular part of their lives, deal with transitions or find new friends.

NWW Connection Circles are meaningful and confidential--and are not recorded--
so women feel free to share, be inspired and enjoy time together.

Overview
As someone who has been drug and alcohol free for over two decades, I believe in the 12 Steps as what AA literature calls, “A design for living,” and that these steps can be used by not just fellow alcoholics and addicts, but by anyone as a way to gain a deeper understanding of ourselves and as a means to develop a meaningful, working relationship with the Goddess, or, if you will, a “Higher Power.”

Goddess in the Steps is a six-month series of workshops about addiction and alcoholism recovery. Addiction is defined as a strong inclination to do, use, or indulge in something repeatedly that is self-harming. One might not necessarily abuse drugs and alcohol to work the 12 Steps. As we work through the steps together, we can address issues that we, as women, may be facing in our lives today and don’t often talk about, for fear of judgment, or feelings of shame.

We’ll discuss the 12 steps of recovery, originally written by Bill Wilson and other founding members of the program of Alcoholics Anonymous. Together, we will look at the barriers some women find with the language of the steps themselves or the sometimes perceived undertones of patriarchal, male god-centered religion. I’ll be taking you through each step, and guiding you in how you might “work” them and utilize them in your own recovery, and in your own relationship with a Higher Power.
Meeting Descriptions
MONTH 1: Being Honest with Yourself: Do I have an addiction?
MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2024, 1:00 PM CT

Step 1 - We admitted we were powerless over alcohol (and other addictions) — that our lives had become unmanageable. We will discuss honesty, the spiritual principle beneath the step, and the nature of honesty, particularly about our drinking and/or using other substances and behaviors.

Step 2 - Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity. We will talk about the spiritual principle of hope, what it means to have hope, and how this step helps us get it. This will also begin our exploration of the phrase “Higher Power.”

MONTH 2: Spiritual Principles of Hope and Possible Misconceptions of Surrender
MONDAY, OCTOBER 21, 2024, 1:00 PM CT

Step 3 - Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him. We will discuss the spiritual principle of and possible misconceptions of surrender. This also begins our discussion of the gendered language of the steps and religious undertones in a historical context.

MONTH 3: Your "Moral Inventory," Courage and Integrity
MONDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 2024, 1:00 PM CT

Step 4 - Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves. We’ll discuss the concept of courage and explore the connotations of “moral” inventory. We’ll also cover the process of writing this inventory.

Step 5 - Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs. We’ll discuss the principle of integrity and the value of sharing our stories and secrets with another person.

MONTH 4: "Defects of Character" and Humility
MONDAY, DECEMBER 16, 2024, 1:00 PM CT

Step 6 - Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character. We’ll discuss the spirituality of willingness and take apart the phrase “defects of character,” and how our higher power goes about removing them.

Step 7 - Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings. We will talk about humility, preconceived notions of it, and what it could mean for us spiritually. We will investigate the meaning of the word “shortcomings,” and revisit the gendered language discussion.

MONTH 5: Making Amends
MONDAY, JANUARY 20, 2024, 1:00 PM CT
Step 8 - Made a list of all persons we had harmed and became willing to make amends to them all. We’ll discuss the nature of love and relationships before and after sobriety, how to become willing, and who should, or shouldn’t, make the list.

Step 9 - Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others. We’ll discuss the spiritual principles of responsibility and accountability, and different kinds of amends. We’ll also talk about the difference between an amend and an apology.

MONTH 6: Spiritual Awakenings
MONDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 2024, 1:00 PM CT
Step 10 - Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it. Will discuss the spiritual life and discipline and how to live the steps as opposed to working them.

Step 11 - Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out. We’ll talk about awareness and mindfulness, and continue the discussion of breaking away from religion and gendered language.

Step 12 - Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these Steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs. We will finish up with the spiritual awakening and acts of service. And we’ll discuss the second, often overlooked part of this step, what it means to “practice these principles in all our affairs.”
